Having the ability to not only father my boys, but also coach them, makes this chapter of life that much sweeter. I fell in love with basketball at the same age that Chandler and Kash are now. The passion for the sport never dwindled and now I get to teach it to them!
Coaching my boys has its challenges, but the rewards that come with it make every minute worth it. The moments they hit a shot and smile or do a move after hours of practicing it, makes it all so memorable.
I can not discipline my boys in practice or games like I would at home. There is no room to send them to or no way of grounding them! However, one of the greatest challenges is naturally expecting them to be leaders, even if they are the youngest on the team. The pressures of being the coaches son can be hard but, I try my best to make it fun. Is there favoritism, well sure, that's my reward for coaching them.
Basketball allows us to connect in ways we may not be able to by eating dinner or doing homework together. It allows me to put that pressure on them, to teach them how to compete, and to teach them how to make mistakes and learn from them.
All in all, I have noticed the boys begin to transition into little young men the last few years of coaching them. They are 7 and 9. They are learning to communicate and understanding the rewards of hard work. Plus, I get to see them out there getting buckets front row!! I love it.
